Hair Care Tips for the Summer: Protecting Your Hair in the Heat

Summer in Buckinghamshire brings long, sunny days – which is wonderful, but your hair needs some extra care during the warmer months. UV rays, heat styling in humid conditions, saltwater from holidays and chlorine from swimming pools can all take their toll. Here are my top tips as a mobile hairdresser in Aylesbury for keeping your hair healthy and vibrant all summer long.

Protect Your Colour from the Sun

UV radiation doesn't just affect your skin – it fades and damages hair colour too. This is especially important if you've recently had a colour treatment and want to preserve it. Look for a UV-protective hair serum or leave-in spray and apply it before going outdoors. Wearing a hat or scarf on the hottest days offers the most direct protection.

For grey-blended or highlighted hair, UV exposure can cause brassiness to develop faster. A weekly use of a purple toning shampoo can help counteract this.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Heat dries out hair from within. This summer, make hydrating your hair a priority:

  • Use a deep conditioning mask at least once a week
  • Apply a leave-in conditioner before any heat styling
  • Look for products containing ingredients such as argan oil, shea butter or hyaluronic acid, which attract and retain moisture
  • Avoid overusing dry shampoo, which can build up and leave hair feeling brittle

Swimming Pool and Saltwater Damage

Chlorine in swimming pools is particularly harsh on hair – it can strip colour, dry out the hair shaft and leave hair feeling rough and straw-like. Before swimming, wet your hair thoroughly with fresh water (saturated hair absorbs less pool water) and apply a leave-in conditioner or a small amount of oil as a barrier. Wear a swimming cap for maximum protection.

After swimming, rinse your hair as soon as possible and follow with a good shampoo and conditioning treatment. For regular swimmers, a specialist clarifying or swimmer's shampoo can help remove chlorine build-up.

Reduce Heat Styling in Summer

Summer is actually a great opportunity to give your hair a break from heavy heat styling. Embrace your natural texture where possible – allow hair to air-dry, use lightweight styling products and try braids or updos that don't require heat. Your hair will thank you for it.

If you do use heat tools, always apply a heat protectant spray first, use the lowest effective temperature and avoid passing the tool over the same section more than twice.
