How to Maintain Your Hair Colour Between Salon Visits
Investing in professional hair colour – whether it's a full tint, grey blending, highlights or balayage – deserves to be looked after properly. The right home care routine makes a significant difference to how long your colour stays vibrant and how your hair feels between appointments. Here are my top tips as a mobile hairdresser offering colour services across Aylesbury and Buckinghamshire.
Switch to Colour-Safe Shampoo and Conditioner
This is the single most impactful change you can make. Standard shampoos often contain sulphates and other harsh cleansing agents that strip colour molecules from the hair shaft faster than necessary. Colour-protecting shampoos use gentler formulas that clean thoroughly without excessive colour loss.
Look for products labelled "colour safe", "colour protect" or "for colour-treated hair" from reputable brands. Pair with a matching conditioner and use both consistently.
Don't Wash Too Frequently
Every wash removes a small amount of colour pigment. The fewer times you wash per week, the longer your colour will last. Most people can comfortably move from daily washing to every two to three days without any negative effect on how their hair looks or feels.
Dry shampoo can be a helpful tool for managing hair between washes, refreshing roots and adding volume without the colour-stripping effect of a full wash.
Use Cooler Water When Washing
Hot water opens the hair cuticle, which allows colour pigment to escape more readily. Washing with cooler water – particularly rinsing with cold water at the end – helps keep the cuticle flat and sealed, locking in colour for longer. It also adds shine, as the flat cuticle reflects light more evenly.
Use a Toning Shampoo for Blonde and Grey Tones
If you have light blonde, silver or grey-blended hair, a purple or blue toning shampoo used once or twice a week can neutralise any yellow or brassy tones that develop between appointments. These shampoos deposit small amounts of violet pigment which cancel out unwanted warmth.
Use in moderation – once or twice a week is usually sufficient. Overuse can leave a purple tinge, particularly on very light hair.
Protect Your Colour from UV and Heat
UV rays from the sun break down colour molecules, causing fading and brassiness – particularly in summer. A UV-protective hair serum or spray can help shield your colour when spending time outdoors. Many leave-in conditioners also offer UV protection.
Similarly, limit the temperature of your heat styling tools where possible, and always use a heat protectant spray before blow-drying or using straighteners or curling tongs.
Book a Gloss or Toner Treatment
Between major colour appointments, a gloss or toner treatment can refresh your colour, add shine and correct any brassiness that has developed. As a mobile hairdresser I can carry out these quick, low-commitment treatments at your home – it's a great way to keep your colour looking fresh without the time or cost of a full colour appointment.
When to Rebook
The right interval between appointments depends on your colour type. As a rough guide:
- All-over tint/root colour: every 4–6 weeks
- Highlights and balayage: every 8–12 weeks
- Grey blending: every 8–12 weeks
- Gloss/toner refresh: can be done between colour appointments
If you're unsure, get in touch and I can advise based on your specific colour and hair type.
